Responding to Want Ads: Worth It? Or a Waste of Time?
Several articles have appeared in local and national newspapers of late on this topic, and there is a difference of opinion. Those that advocate responding to want ads, or even sending resumes en masse to companies, focus on having a dynamic, "grab 'em" type of cover letter and a finely tuned resume. That's all well and fine, if that paperwork gets to someone who is in a hiring position, and if the information is comprehensive and believable!
But all too often, your resume and cover letter are screened by someone who doesn't really understand the requirements of the position to be filled and sometimes barely knows how to turn on a computer, and is simply reviewed against a set of requirements for the position and a list of "buzz words." You don't want your future being decided by that someone, who doesn't know the difference between one lending skill or another, the really true depth of that position, such as the manager of the area would know. The person that you will report to... should be the person reviewing your background and qualifications.
Our experience has been that sending resumes/cover letters in response to want ads is a shot in the dark! We have placed numerous candidates who had earlier received a "thanks but no thanks" letter from the client! How? By speaking directly to the person doing the hiring and spotlighting that person, sharing with the manager technical skills which we had validated, via references, and answering direct questions about that person's experience, interests and abilities. That's what caused the hiring manager to schedule an interview, not the resume! In fact, we often schedule interviews with clients without ever having provided a resume or identified the person by name. So you decide which approach is more effective.
You should also be aware that sending a resume in response to a want ad often prevents us from working with you relative to that company for one full year. Many companies have a standard policy that if a resume is sent directly to them, they will not accept that candidate from any other source, including us, for one year! That applies to all positions within the company, not simply the one in response to which the resume was sent, regardless of our relationship with them.
We have placed numerous candidates who were first considered for one position only to later be interviewed for and get offered another! So you might want to stop and think before you send out a barrage of resumes, if you plan to work with us or are already doing so! What many candidates do is contact us first, to determine if we are working that particular search for the client or have any relationship with that client, before they send a resume. We suggest that you speak with us about specific companies and opportunities prior to sending a resume directly, to avoid a conflict of effort.
This doesn't mean that you should rely solely on us. It simply means that you should communicate with us.

Should You Rely Only on Us in Your Job Search?
Absolutely not! You shouldn't rely solely on R.E.B. & Associates, Inc., or on anyone else, except for yourself. Don't let anyone convince you to do so! However, we do suggest open communications, in order to avoid conflicts of effort.
On that note, we'd like to point out that we won't necessarily be in constant touch with you, letting you know everything that's going on, because if we did that for every candidate, we'd never place anyone. But rest assured, when we do have a client that would like to see you or learn more about you, we'll get in touch with you! We welcome your occasional calls to touch base, of course, and of course our Web site has complete E-Mail capabilities. If you see a position for which you'd like to be considered, drop us a note. Chances are you're already being considered, but it never hurts to be sure!
